The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A member of the European Parliament, Hannah Neumann, warned that the Taliban are moving to impose a “digital iron curtain” over Afghanistan, allegedly with backing from China and Iran.
In a post on X on Friday, lawmaker Neumann said
a recent two-day internet blackout in Afghanistan “was a test run,” claiming
the Taliban seek to “monitor, silence and isolate a nation.”
“Look away now, and Afghanistan becomes a
digital North Korea in the heart of Asia,” she wrote.
The remarks come amid growing concerns from
international rights groups over online censorship and surveillance in
Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
Afghan
authorities have not commented on Neumann’s statement.
