The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A new polio vaccination campaign was launched Monday across parts of southwestern Afghanistan, health officials said.
The “Polio-Free Afghanistan” initiative said teams began
administering doses in districts of Kandahar, Helmand, Farah and Herat
provinces. The group did not specify how many children are expected to be
vaccinated.
The World Health Organization has confirmed 28 polio cases
so far in 2025, including four in Afghanistan and 24 in neighboring Pakistan.
The campaign follows a separate two-day drive over the
weekend in several districts of Nuristan and Nangarhar provinces, where health
workers also sought to reach children with the vaccine.
Polio remains endemic in only Afghanistan and Pakistan,
where insecurity, vaccine hesitancy and restrictions on health workers continue
to hinder eradication efforts.
