The Kabul Tribune (KT) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned a deadly attack on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, that killed at least 12 people and injured 309, according to Saudi authorities.
“I am deeply shocked by and strongly condemn Saturday’s
lethal attack by the Houthis on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia,” Guterres said in a post on X. He added that attacks on civilians
and civilian infrastructure violate international law and must cease
immediately.
The Saudi civil aviation authority said the dead included
four Saudis, two Bangladeshis and one national each from the United States,
Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt.
Airport operations have been suspended following the attack.
A Saudi-led military coalition vowed to respond, blaming the
Houthis for the assault and describing it as a “war crime.”
The Houthis claimed responsibility for strikes on the
airport on Thursday that killed three people and damaged an aircraft. However,
the group had not immediately claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack.
The incident has heightened tensions in the region, raising
concerns over the safety of civilians and critical infrastructure amid
escalating hostilities.
Attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure are
prohibited under international humanitarian law.
