The Kabul Tribune (KT)— U.N. political chief Rosemary A. DiCarlo met with senior Taliban officials in Kabul and Kandahar to discuss the Doha process, Afghanistan’s economic and social pressures, climate change, counter-narcotics efforts and the rights of women and girls, she said.
DiCarlo, the U.N. under-secretary-general for political and
peacebuilding affairs, said on X that she met in Kandahar with Taliban
spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
“In Kandahar, I met de facto Spokesperson Mujahid to discuss
the Doha process, socioeconomic pressures, climate change and Afghan returns,”
DiCarlo said. “We also discussed counter-narcotics, alternative livelihoods for
affected communities, and women’s and girls’ rights.”
Earlier, DiCarlo met in Kabul with Taliban Foreign Minister
Amir Khan Muttaqi. The discussions also covered the Doha process and the rights
of women and girls, according to the U.N. official.
DiCarlo’s meetings come as the United Nations continues
diplomatic engagement with the Taliban authorities over Afghanistan’s political,
humanitarian and economic situation.
The U.N. has repeatedly called on the Taliban to reverse
restrictions on women and girls, including measures that have barred girls from
secondary schools and women from universities and restricted women’s access to
employment and public life.
The discussions also come amid continued international
concerns over Afghanistan’s economic pressures, humanitarian needs,
climate-related challenges and the return of Afghan migrants and refugees from
neighboring countries.
