The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The U.N. Human Rights Council on Monday adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan for another year.
Draft resolution A/HRC/63/L.8, on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, was adopted without a vote, the council said on X.
Richard Bennett, the U.N. special rapporteur for Afghanistan, welcomed the decision, saying the resolution extends his mandate and includes new requirements focused on human rights concerns in the country.
The resolution provides for an enhanced interactive dialogue in June 2027, with a focus on gender-related concerns, Bennett said on X.
It also requests the special rapporteur to prepare a study on minorities in Afghanistan, to be presented to the council in September 2027.
Bennett thanked the council for adopting the resolution and for extending his mandate for another year.
The special rapporteur's mandate includes monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation in Afghanistan and engaging with relevant stakeholders on rights violations and abuses.
