The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Rosemary DiCarlo, the U.N. undersecretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs, met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi during her fifth visit to Afghanistan, discussing human rights, the Doha Process and humanitarian issues.
In a post on X on Sunday, DiCarlo said the talks covered
international expectations on human rights, particularly the rights of women
and girls, as well as climate change, natural disasters, the return of Afghans and
U.N. mandates.
The meeting comes as the United Nations continues engagement
with Taliban authorities over Afghanistan’s political future and humanitarian
needs. The Taliban administration has faced sustained international criticism
over restrictions on women and girls, including bans on girls’ secondary and
higher education and limits on women’s participation in public life.
The Doha Process is a U.N.-led framework for international
engagement on Afghanistan, bringing together countries and other stakeholders
to discuss issues related to the country’s future.
