The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A delegation of the U.S. Afghanistan War Commission met Monday with Pakistan’s army chief, Syed Asim Munir, as part of a review of the United States’ 20-year engagement in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s military said.
The delegation, led by commission co-chairs Shamila N.
Chaudhary and Dr. Colin F. Jackson, met Munir at the General Headquarters in
Rawalpindi, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations, the military’s
media wing.
Discussions covered Pakistan’s role during the Afghanistan
conflict, the regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan,
ISPR said.
Munir shared Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics
that shaped the conflict and highlighted the challenges Pakistan faced during
the prolonged war in Afghanistan, according to the statement.
He also stressed the importance of including the regional
perspective and Pakistan’s experience when assessing the strategic, diplomatic
and operational dimensions of the conflict.
The U.S. delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding
role and sacrifices during the conflict and appreciated its continued
contribution to regional peace and stability, ISPR said.
The Afghanistan War Commission was established by the U.S.
Congress in 2021 to review key U.S. decisions and actions related to the war in
Afghanistan from June 2001 to August 2021.
