The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A Pakistani army captain and seven militants were killed during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district, the military said Saturday.

The Pakistan Inter-Services Public Relations, the military’s media wing, said security forces conducted the operation Friday after receiving intelligence about the presence of militants in the area.

The troops engaged the militants during the operation, according to the statement. The military said the militants took refuge inside a mosque during the exchange of fire and that seven of them were killed.

The military identified the slain officer as 27-year-old Capt. Hamza Akram, a resident of Narowal district in Punjab province. It said Akram was leading his troops and pursuing the militants when he was killed.

Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the militants, according to the military. It alleged that those killed had been involved in attacks against security forces and law enforcement agencies, as well as the killing of civilians.

The military said a sanitization operation was underway in the area to search for and eliminate any other militants.

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to Akram and expressed condolences to his family.

“The motherland pays its profound tribute to the great sacrifice of its brave son,” Zardari said, according to a statement issued by his office.

He said the nation remained indebted to the sacrifices of members of the security forces and offered prayers for Akram’s family.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has faced persistent militant violence in recent years, with security forces carrying out frequent operations against armed groups in the province.
