The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have killed two people in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, while three children remain missing in neighboring Nuristan province, Taliban disaster management officials said Tuesday.
Taj Mohammad Hemat, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban's National Disaster Preparedness Authority, said flooding in the Tangi Sohail area of Nurgal district in Kunar also caused extensive damage to homes and other property.
He said assessments were continuing to determine whether the death toll could rise.
In neighboring Nuristan province, heavy rains caused flash floods in Barg-e-Matal district, where three children were reported missing, Hemat said in a video statement.
According to the official, the flooding damaged at least 87 homes, a central mosque, irrigation canals, electricity infrastructure and agricultural land.
Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including seasonal flash floods, which frequently cause casualties and widespread damage to homes, farmland and public infrastructure.
