The Kabul Tribune (KT) — AFP reported that a suicide bomber attacked a crowded area near a police station during a civil society protest in Pakistan’s northern Swat district on Sunday, killing at least 14 people, including eight police officers, and injuring 22 others, police said.
Swat Deputy Inspector General of Police Fida Hussain told
AFP that the bomber attempted to enter the police station at a busy
intersection but was stopped by police at the main gate.
“The suicide bomber attempted to enter the police station
located at the intersection, but was stopped by police at the main gate,”
Hussain said, according to AFP.
He said 22 people were wounded and that another body,
believed to be that of the bomber, had been taken to a hospital.
The attack occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a northern
Pakistani province where authorities have been fighting the Tehrik-i-Taliban
Pakistan (TTP). No group immediately claimed responsibility for the Swat
attack.
Separately, a homemade bomb explosion in Peshawar, the
provincial capital, wounded four police officers on Sunday, according to the
city’s police chief, who told AFP that the TTP had claimed responsibility for
the attack.
A Pakistani military spokesperson said Friday that terrorist
attacks had killed 819 security personnel and civilians in the country so far
this year.
Pakistan has repeatedly blamed violence in its border
provinces on militant activity originating from Afghanistan. The Taliban
authorities in Kabul have denied involvement by Afghanistan in attacks in
Pakistan.
