The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The World Health Organization on Saturday underscored the importance of breastfeeding in promoting child health and development, calling on people across Afghanistan to support mothers and protect every child's right to breast milk.
Marking the start of World Breastfeeding Week, the U.N. health agency said breast milk provides the essential nutrition, protection and care infants need to grow healthy and strong.
"Breastfeeding plays a vital role in ensuring healthy growth, strengthening health and giving every child the best start in life," the WHO said in a post on X.
The agency urged communities to stand with mothers across Afghanistan and support breastfeeding as a fundamental right for every child.
World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually to raise awareness of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and to encourage policies and community support that enable mothers to breastfeed.
