The Kabul Tribune (KT) — An Afghan woman detained during protests in Iran has been sentenced to five years in prison, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
Homaira Sharifi, currently held in the women’s ward of Evin
Prison, was recently informed of the sentence issued by Iran’s judiciary.
Details about the charges against her and the court that handed down the ruling
remain unclear due to a lack of judicial transparency, and investigations into
the case are ongoing.
According to Hengaw, Sharifi has attempted suicide at least
twice while in detention, amid deteriorating physical and psychological
conditions and a lack of adequate medical care.
Sources familiar with the case said Sharifi suffers from a
skin condition and severe psychological distress linked to the conditions of
her detention. Prison authorities have reportedly denied her access to
specialized medical treatment and sufficient healthcare.
The same sources said Sharifi does not possess identity
documents. Since her transfer to Evin Prison, she has made two suicide
attempts, with the most recent incident reported last week.
Sharifi was arrested during protests in January 2026 and was
initially transferred to Qarchak Prison. On Feb. 16, 2026, she was moved to the
women’s ward of Evin Prison, where she remains in detention.
