The Kabul Tribune (KT) - China says it is willing to continue cooperating with Russia at the United Nations Security Council and support efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, Reuters reported.
In a phone call on Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that the key to resolving tensions around the Strait of Hormuz is an immediate ceasefire. He said China has consistently supported resolving international disputes through dialogue and negotiation rather than military action.
The call came ahead of a U.N. Security Council vote next week on a Bahraini draft resolution aimed at protecting commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
Wang urged China and Russia, as permanent members of the Security Council, to take a balanced and objective approach and work to build broader international consensus, according to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry.
A Russian Foreign Ministry statement said both sides discussed the need for a rapid ceasefire and the launch of political and diplomatic dialogue. It also said the two countries shared similar views on major global issues, including the situation involving Iran.
China has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in the Gulf and wider Middle East, urging an end to fighting that has continued for more than a month and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global route for oil and gas.
