Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Telegraph has reported that Donald Trump is strongly considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, following disagreements with allies over the war with Iran.
In an interview, Trump described NATO as a “paper tiger” and
said leaving the alliance was now “beyond reconsideration,” signaling growing
frustration within the White House toward European partners.
According to the report, the US president criticized NATO
members for refusing to support his call to send warships to reopen the Strait
of Hormuz, a key global oil route through which around 20 percent of the
world’s oil passes.
Trump also singled out the United Kingdom, criticizing Prime
Minister Keir Starmer for not joining the US-Israeli war effort against Iran.
He questioned Britain’s naval capabilities, claiming the country lacks an
effective navy.
In response, Starmer reaffirmed his support for NATO,
calling it “the single most effective military alliance the world has ever
seen.”
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also expressed
dissatisfaction with NATO allies, describing the alliance as a “one-way street”
and suggesting Washington may reassess its membership after the conflict.
The report adds that Trump is expected to deliver a national
address outlining updates on the war, which he said could end within weeks,
with the stated objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Tensions have escalated after NATO members declined to
provide military support or access to bases for US operations, further
deepening divisions within the alliance.
