The Kabul Tribune (KT) - The Taliban Supreme Court says that six people, including two women, were flogged in Jowzjan Province on charges of “illicit relations, insulting officials, breaking the fast, and adultery,” while another woman was flogged in Balkh Province on charges of “illicit relations.”
In a statement issued on Sunday, March 29, the court said that in Qush Tepa district of Jowzjan province, the individuals had previously been sentenced to six months to two years in prison and 20 to 39 lashes. The sentences were carried out after being approved by the Taliban Supreme Court.
In a separate statement, it was added that in Zari district of Balkh province, a woman was sentenced to five years in prison and 35 lashes for "illicit relations". The sentence was also implemented after approval by the Taliban Supreme Court.
This comes as the Taliban have repeatedly carried out public flogging punishments for various offenses, a practice that has been widely criticized by international human rights organizations, which say it violates human rights laws.
