The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Pakistan has condemned the sentencing of Kashmiri political leader Aasiya Andrabi and her associates, calling for international attention to human rights conditions in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Pakistan, authorities rejected the life imprisonment sentence handed to
Andrabi, along with 30-year prison terms for Fehmeeda Sofi and Nahida Nasreen
by a court in New Delhi.
Pakistan described the ruling as a “grave miscarriage of
justice,” stating it reflects continued suppression of fundamental rights in
Indian-administered Kashmir.
The statement said the convictions are part of what it
called a broader pattern of politically motivated prosecutions aimed at
silencing dissent and intimidating those advocating for the rights of the
Kashmiri people.
It also raised concerns over due process, judicial
independence and compliance with international human rights obligations.
According to the statement, Andrabi has long been a vocal
advocate for the Kashmir cause, and her sentencing highlights what Pakistan
described as shrinking space for political expression and civil liberties in
the region.
Pakistan further warned that such actions could exacerbate
regional tensions and undermine prospects for peace and stability in South
Asia.
The government urged the international community, including
the United Nations, to take notice and hold India accountable, while calling
for the protection of political, social and human rights, including freedom of
expression and fair trial.
The statement reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the people
of Jammu and Kashmir in their pursuit of self-determination, referencing
relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
