The Kabul Tribune (KT) - As the new school year begins in Afghanistan, millions of girls above sixth grade have been barred from attending school for the fifth consecutive year.

After the Taliban returned to power in 2021, they banned education for girls beyond sixth grade—a decision that remains unchanged to this day.

Despite domestic and international reactions, the Taliban have taken no action or provided any response regarding this issue over the past five years.

The United Nations and other human rights organizations have repeatedly warned about the negative consequences of these educational restrictions on women in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is the only country in the world where the Taliban have effectively restricted broad access for women to secondary and higher education.
