The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called for greater inclusion of women in water governance, highlighting persistent inequalities in access to water resources worldwide.

In a statement marking World Water Day on March 22, 2026, UNESCO said that while water is essential for life, women and girls often bear the primary responsibility for collecting water in households and communities, yet remain underrepresented in decision-making and leadership roles.

The organization emphasized the need for inclusive solutions that ensure equal participation, noting that this year’s theme, “Where water flows, equality grows,” focuses on the link between water access and gender equality.

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater and promote sustainable management of water resources.

UNESCO also highlighted its ongoing efforts through programs such as the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme and the World Water Assessment Programme, which aim to support countries in managing water resources, monitoring groundwater, adapting to climate change and improving cooperation over shared water systems.
