The Kabul Tribune (KT) - The United Nations Human Rights Council is holding its sixty-first session today, February 23, to review the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

During the session, the Council will hear an update from the UN Secretary-General on the establishment of an independent investigative mechanism to examine international crimes and the most serious violations of international law committed in Afghanistan, as outlined in resolution 60/2.

The Council will also receive a report from Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, focusing on the rights of Afghan women and girls. This will be followed by an enhanced interactive dialogue.

Additionally, the Council has requested the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to present a comprehensive report reflecting the perspectives of victims and survivors regarding justice and redress. These reports will serve as the foundation for the interactive dialogue, ensuring that the voices of those affected are heard.

Resolution 60/2 also extended Richard Bennett’s mandate as Special Rapporteur for another year, highlighting the UN’s continued commitment to monitoring and addressing human rights violations in Afghanistan.
