The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Trend News reported that Turkmenistan is set to invest in the Torghundi-Herat railway project, Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov said during a meeting with Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Abdul Ghani Baradar.
According to Trend, Meredov shared the update on his X
account. The meeting was also attended by Afghanistan’s ministers of mines and
petroleum, Hedayatullah Badri, and water and energy, Mohammad Younus
Akhundzada, as well as Turkmenistan’s minister of transport and railways and
the head of Turkmengaz State Concern.
Meredov said practical work has already started in
Torghundi, Afghanistan.
The Torghundi-Herat railway is a strategic 113–120 km line,
initiated in 2025 with $500 million in funding pledged by Kazakhstan. The project
aims to boost trade by connecting the Soviet-era Turkmen border terminal at
Torghundi with Herat city. It forms a key part of the Lapis Lazuli corridor and
is expected to reduce transit times to South Asian markets.
