The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, inaugurated a special room titled “Afghan Women and Girls” at Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting support for Afghan women facing restrictions under Taliban rule.
The room was established as a gesture of recognition and solidarity with Afghan women and girls who have faced sweeping limitations under the Taliban, including the denial of basic rights such as education and employment.
Several women’s rights activists attended the inauguration ceremony, including Fawzia Koofi, a former member of Afghanistan’s parliament.
Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said in a post on X that the initiative aims to honor the struggle of Afghan women for their rights and freedoms. He stressed that Spain’s foreign policy will continue to support Afghan women and strengthen their right to have their voices heard.
Albares added that opening the room sends a clear message of Spain’s commitment — along with the international community — to supporting Afghan women, noting that international efforts to advance their status will continue.
The “Afghan Women and Girls” room at Spain’s Foreign Ministry is intended as a symbol of solidarity and will serve as a space to highlight the legal, social and cultural challenges faced by Afghan women, while amplifying their voices on the international stage.
The move comes as the Taliban have continued to impose restrictive policies on women and girls for more than four years, drawing repeated warnings from the international community over widespread violations of women’s rights in Afghanistan.
