The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban Ministry of Finance says it has increased import tariffs on several goods, including plastic footwear, firecrackers and kites, as well as on some fruits.
In a statement released on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, the ministry said the decision was made based on a ruling by the tariff committee.
According to the statement, import tariffs on plastic footwear were raised from 30% to 50%, while tariffs on firecrackers and kites increased from 10% to 80%.
The Taliban Ministry of Finance also said import tariffs on three types of fruit — grapes, pears and strawberries — have been raised to 80%. Previously, the seasonal tariff on these fruits was set at 50%, while the non-seasonal tariff stood at 40%.
The ministry said the tariff increases are intended to support domestic industry and local production.
Afghanistan is widely regarded as a country heavily dependent on imports, with most commercial goods brought in from neighboring countries.
