The Kabul Tribune (KT) — UNICEF Afghanistan says it screened 1.2 million children for wasting in November 2025, admitting 33,510 children for treatment, the majority of them girls.
In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, January 4,
2026, UNICEF said that 58 percent of the children admitted for treatment were
girls.
Despite the efforts, the agency warned that the scale of
need remains severe, noting that an estimated 857,000 children under the age of
five across Afghanistan are expected to require treatment for severe acute
malnutrition.
UNICEF has repeatedly cautioned that worsening economic
conditions, food insecurity and limited access to health services continue to
place millions of Afghan children at risk.
