The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Iran has executed 12 prisoners, including an Afghan citizen, in multiple prisons across the country, according to a report by the human rights organization Hengaw.
In a statement released late Wednesday, January 3, Hengaw said the Afghan national, identified as Nazir, was executed at Adelabad Prison in Shiraz after being convicted of drug-related offenses.
The organization said the remaining executions involved prisoners convicted mainly of "premeditated murder and drug-related crimes". The executions were carried out in prisons in Karaj, Rasht, Bushehr, Shahrekord, Sabzevar, Kashmar, Malayer, and Shiraz.
Iran remains one of the countries with the highest execution rates in the world, a practice that has long drawn strong criticism from international human rights organizations.
