The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A new polio vaccination campaign will begin next week in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces of Kunar, Nuristan, and Laghman, the Afghanistan Polio-Free Initiative announced Tuesday.
The campaign, scheduled to start on Saturday, October 18,
aims to immunize children across several districts in the three provinces, the
organization said in a statement. Children will receive the vaccine through
both injections and oral drops as part of efforts to boost their immunity
against the crippling disease.
The foundation did not specify how many children are
expected to be vaccinated in this round.
Similar campaigns have previously been carried out in
eastern Afghanistan as part of the country’s broader effort to eradicate the
virus. Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries in the world
where polio continues to circulate, according to health officials and global
health organizations.
