The Kabul Tribune (KT) — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that despite progress since the adoption of the Paris Agreement a decade ago, the world remains on course for dangerous levels of global warming.

In a post on his official X account on Thursday night, November 8, Guterres said the Paris Agreement had helped steer the planet away from a catastrophic 4–5°C future. However, he cautioned that existing national plans and policies still project temperature rises well above 2°C by the end of the century — an “existential threat for millions.”

The UN chief urged world leaders to use the upcoming COP30 Climate Conference in Brazil to “kickstart a new decade of implementation and acceleration,” emphasizing that stronger commitments are essential to keep the 1.5°C target alive.

The Paris Agreement, adopted at COP21 in 2015, brought nearly every country together under a shared goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Since then, global emissions have continued to rise, and scientists warn that the window to meet the target is rapidly closing. COP30, scheduled to take place in 2025 in Brazil, will mark a critical moment for countries to submit stronger climate commitments and demonstrate concrete progress toward the promises made a decade ago in Paris
