The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Australian police said Monday they will interview a man accused of firing dozens of shots from a Sydney apartment window, critically injuring at least one person, as investigators work to determine his motive while ruling out links to terrorism.
The suspect allegedly opened fire with a .30-calibre rifle
from an apartment in the suburb of Croydon Park on Sunday night, discharging as
many as 50 rounds before being apprehended, acting Superintendent Stephen Parry
said.
“It is incredible that nobody died,” Parry told reporters at
a press conference, adding that the man, who has no known ties to organized
crime or terror groups, is expected to face firearms charges.
Two people were hospitalized, with one undergoing surgery,
Parry said. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect was among them.
Ambulance personnel treated 14 others at the scene for shock or minor injuries,
according to NSW Ambulance.
“The male person has no recorded mental health history with
us,” Parry said. “He’s been assessed overnight for physical and mental health
injuries and has been deemed suitable to return to custody.”
Police said they have not yet established a motive for the
shooting. Earlier, a police spokesperson told Reuters they did not believe the
incident was motivated by terrorism or religion.
Parry said the suspect had very few prior interactions with
police over the past two decades.
