The Kabul Tribune (KT) — At least 10 people were killed and more than 30 others injured after a car exploded near a metro station close to the historic Red Fort monument in India’s capital, Delhi, on Monday evening, Indian media reported.
According to NDTV and Reuters, the explosion occurred around
6:42 p.m. local time when a slow-moving vehicle stopped near a traffic light
and suddenly detonated, setting nearby vehicles and auto-rickshaws on fire.
Eyewitnesses described a loud bang that shook windows across the neighborhood.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said the cause of
the blast remains under investigation, and authorities are reviewing CCTV
footage from the area. “We are investigating the explosion from every angle,”
he told reporters, adding that the situation is under control.
Fire officials said emergency crews reached the scene within
minutes and extinguished the blaze after receiving distress calls. Survivors
were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Lok Nayak Hospital, where Dr. Manish
Kumar Jha said many of the wounded were in critical condition.
India’s Home Minister Amit Shah announced he would visit the
site and confirmed that a high-level probe had been launched.
The Red Fort, a 17th-century Mughal-era landmark and UNESCO
World Heritage Site, is one of Delhi’s most visited historical attractions and
a symbol of India’s independence celebrations.
