The Kabul Tribune (KT) — UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged countries to unite in the fight against global hunger, warning that hundreds of millions of people still go to bed hungry each night.
“Around the world, 673 million people still go to bed hungry
every night,” Guterres said in a statement marking World Food Day. “World Food
Day is a call for solidarity across borders, sectors and communities. Let us
respond. Let us come together once again to build food systems that nourish
people and protect the planet.”
Guterres recalled how nations joined forces eight decades
ago, in the aftermath of war, to confront hunger and build institutions
dedicated to food security. “Eighty years ago, in a world ravaged by war,
countries came together to defeat hunger,” he said. “In the decades since, the
world has made dramatic advances. Yet recent crises demonstrate that we cannot
drop our guard.”
The UN chief called for renewed international cooperation to
create sustainable food systems and ensure that no one is left behind in the
fight against hunger.
