The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Richard Bennett, the U.N. special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has condemned U.S. government sanctions against the International Criminal Court and called for their immediate withdrawal.
In a statement, Bennett said he echoed U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk in opposing the sanctions, warning that they should not undermine the court’s work.
“I continue to support the ICC’s investigation of the situation in #Afghanistan and am confident that it is continuing and will not be set back by these outrageous sanctions,” Bennett said.
Bennett reaffirmed his support for the ICC’s investigation into the situation in Afghanistan, expressing confidence that the proceedings would continue despite the U.S. measures.
He urged the U.S. government to withdraw all sanctions against the court immediately.
