The Kabul Tribune (KT)— U.N. Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan Richard Bennett condemned an explosion in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi area that injured scores of schoolchildren, calling for a full and independent investigation into the attack.
An explosion occurred Monday late afternoon near a school in the predominantly Hazara neighborhood of Dasht-e-Barchi, injuring scores of children, according to reports.
“I condemn the heinous attack harming numerous children near a school in Dasht-e Barchi yesterday,” Bennett said in a post on X. “Once again this mainly #Hazara part of #Kabul has been targeted. Deplorable!”
Bennett called for a “full and independent investigation” aimed at bringing those responsible to justice.
Dasht-e-Barchi, a predominantly Hazara area in western Kabul, has previously been targeted in deadly attacks, including assaults on schools and other civilian sites.
Bennett has repeatedly raised concerns over the security and rights of Afghanistan’s Hazara community and called for greater protection of civilians.
The cause of Monday’s explosion and the identity of those responsible were not immediately clear.
