The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Kingdom’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Richard Lindsay, praised the resilience of Afghan women and girls but said their exclusion from education, employment and public life is preventing the country from reaching its full potential.

“Almost 5 years since the Taliban returned to power, the resilience of Afghan women & girls remains incredible,” Lindsay said in a post on X.

“But resilience should not be a substitute for rights,” he added, stressing that Afghanistan cannot reach its full potential while women and girls remain excluded from education, work and public life.

Lindsay’s comments came ahead of the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power on Aug. 15, 2021. Since then, the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on women and girls, including barring girls from secondary schools and women from universities and restricting women’s employment and participation in public life.
