The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban have banned the issuance of license plates for right-hand drive vehicles in Afghanistan, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry confirmed.
Abdul Mateen Qani said that no license plates will be issued for vehicles with right-hand steering from now on.
He added that discussions are ongoing among relevant authorities on whether to modify the steering systems of such vehicles, but no final decision has yet been made.
Qani also said that all right-hand drive vehicles previously allowed to operate in Kabul will be removed from the capital.
The decision comes as right-hand drive vehicles have long been considered a traffic safety concern in Afghanistan. Most of these vehicles are imported from neighboring countries, and their incompatibility with road structures and traffic systems has raised concerns about increased accidents.
