The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Seven people, including five children, were killed and four others were injured in an explosion caused by an old, unexploded ordnance in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, Taliban officials said.

The incident took place on Monday in the Dangaligad area of Bermal district, where the explosive device detonated, according to local authorities.

Officials from the provincial police command said the blast occurred when a scrap metal collector attempted to cut open the old ordnance, triggering the explosion. A total of 11 people were affected.

The injured were transferred to hospital for treatment, and authorities urged residents to avoid approaching or handling unexploded explosive devices.

The incident highlights the ongoing danger posed by unexploded remnants of past conflicts across Afghanistan, which continue to cause deadly accidents in several provinces.

Experts say children and teenagers are among the most frequent victims of such incidents, largely due to a lack of awareness about the risks posed by unexploded ordnance.

Taliban officials have also called on the public to immediately report any such devices to security authorities in order to prevent further casualties.
