The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Work on the CASA-1000 power
transmission project is underway in three phases across Afghanistan, the Taliban-run
national power utility said.
According to the company, construction on the first phase
resumed in December 2024. The phase spans 197 kilometers from Sher Khan Bandar
in the north to Deh Salah district in Baghlan province and includes 564 electricity
transmission towers.
The second phase covers 196.4 kilometers and includes 587
towers, passing through Baghlan, Panjshir and Kapisa provinces.
The third phase extends 188.4 kilometers across Kapisa,
Kabul, Laghman and Nangarhar provinces, reaching the Torkham border crossing.
This phase includes 562 transmission towers.
The utility described CASA-1000 as a strategic regional
project that will transmit electricity from Central Asia to South Asia through
Afghanistan, calling it one of the region’s key infrastructure initiatives.
Once completed, Afghanistan is expected to generate around
$60 million annually in revenue from the project, according to the company.
