The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The World Health Organization (WHO) has stressed that protecting people in Afghanistan from the harms of tobacco is a shared responsibility, marking World No Tobacco Day.

In a statement posted on X, WHO said the tobacco industry uses deceptive tactics and appealing flavors to conceal the deadly risks of its products.

The organization urged Afghans to protect their health by strengthening smoke-free environments and reducing exposure to tobacco use.

WHO’s representative in Afghanistan, Edwin Ceniza Salvador, said exposing the true nature of tobacco can help pave the way for a healthier future in the country.

“Protecting the people of Afghanistan from tobacco use is a shared responsibility,” he said.

World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31 to raise awareness about the serious and irreversible harms caused by tobacco and to encourage governments to implement policies aimed at reducing its use.
