The Kabul Tribune (KT) — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for urgent global action to address extreme poverty, saying around 800 million people worldwide are still living in severe deprivation.

In a statement posted on X, Guterres said the situation of those living in extreme poverty is being worsened by ongoing conflicts, the climate crisis, deepening inequalities and heavy debt burdens.

He stressed the need to reshape economies to prioritize people and ensure inclusive growth, urging continued efforts to reduce poverty and achieve global development goals.

Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to fighting poverty and called on the international community to intensify efforts to end extreme poverty worldwide.
