The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Dozens of journalists, media workers and human rights activists have called on the United Nations and international organizations to push for the immediate release of detained journalists in Afghanistan, according to an open letter released.
The letter, signed by over 360 media activists as well as
human rights defenders and sent by the Afghanistan Media Support Organization
to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, raises concerns about the condition
of several jailed reporters.
The signatories described the situation of Shakib Ahmad
Nazari, Bashir Hatef, Hamid Farhadi and other detained journalists as
“alarming,” saying they were arrested because of their professional work and
reporting.
The letter said the detention of journalists violates
freedom of expression and contradicts international human rights standards.
It also warned that such actions risk creating a climate of fear in society and restricting the free flow of information
