The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says that since the start of clashes involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, 3.2 million people have been displaced within Iran.
In a statement Thursday, March 11, 2026, the agency said
preliminary assessments indicate that between 600,000 and 1 million Iranian
families have been forced to leave their homes due to the ongoing conflict.
Most of these families are reportedly moving from Tehran and
other major cities toward northern regions and rural areas to seek safer
locations.
The UNHCR warned that if clashes continue, the number of
displaced people could rise further, significantly increasing humanitarian
needs.
The agency also noted that refugee families, particularly
Afghan migrants in Iran, are affected by the crisis and face heightened
vulnerability due to fragile conditions and limited access to support networks.
Given its long-term presence in Iran, the UNHCR is
coordinating with national authorities and partner agencies to assess emerging
needs and strengthen preparedness to respond to the increasing displacement.
The UNHCR emphasized the importance of protecting civilians,
ensuring access to humanitarian assistance, and keeping borders open for those
seeking safety.
