The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Antonio Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations, said women in Afghanistan are being systematically erased from public life, warning that the situation represents a serious injustice with long-term consequences for the country.
Speaking at the opening of the 70th session of the UN
Commission on the Status of Women, Guterres said the situation in Afghanistan
stands out globally in terms of restrictions placed on women and girls.
He noted that Afghan women are not only excluded from many
aspects of public life but are also prevented from entering UN compounds in the
country.
“This is injustice in practice,” Guterres said, warning that
such policies undermine development today and close off the future for all
Afghans.
The UN chief stressed that ensuring justice and equal rights
for women and girls is essential for sustainable development, peace and human
rights worldwide.
