The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban Supreme Court said 24 people, including three women, were publicly flogged in Kabul and Ghor after being convicted of drug-related offenses and “moral corruption.”

In a statement released Sunday, the court said 18 people in Kabul were punished on charges of selling and trafficking narcotics.

In a separate statement, the court said six people — including three women — were flogged in Ghor after being convicted of “moral corruption.” Each was sentenced by a Taliban primary court to 39 lashes, a punishment later approved and carried out following confirmation by the Supreme Court.

The court also said the Taliban’s primary counter-narcotics court in Kabul had sentenced 18 people to prison terms ranging from seven months to three years, in addition to 10 to 39 lashes, which were implemented after the Supreme Court’s approval.

Over the past four years, the Taliban have repeatedly carried out corporal punishments, including flogging, in several provinces across Afghanistan. The practice has drawn strong criticism from human rights organizations, which say such punishments violate human dignity.
