The Kabul Tribune (KT)— Spain’s prime minister on Saturday voiced support for Afghan women, saying they will always have a place in Spain as they face sweeping restrictions under Taliban rule.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Afghan women’s voices would not be silenced despite the limitations imposed on them since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
“Our voice will always be your voice,” Sánchez said in a message of solidarity. “You will always have a place in Spain where you can show your courage and dignity until the day you can return to Afghanistan. No one will ever be able to make you invisible.”
Since the Taliban takeover, women and girls in Afghanistan have faced some of the world’s harshest restrictions on their rights. Girls have been barred from attending school beyond the sixth grade, and women are banned from universities, most forms of employment and many public spaces.
The Taliban authorities have also imposed strict rules on women’s movement, dress and participation in public life, drawing widespread condemnation from the international community and human rights groups.
Rights advocates say the restrictions have left millions of Afghan women and girls increasingly vulnerable, cutting them off from education, livelihoods and basic freedoms.
Sánchez’s remarks came as governments and activists around the world renewed calls for greater international support for Afghan women and for pressure on Taliban authorities to restore their fundamental rights.
