The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Gold prices soared to a record high above $5,100 an ounce on Monday, continuing a historic rally as investors looked for a safe place to put their money amid rising global uncertainties, Reuters reported.

Spot gold rose 2.2 percent to $5,089.78 per ounce, after earlier reaching $5,110.50. U.S. gold futures for February delivery also rose to $5,086.30 per ounce.

The precious metal has surged 64 percent in 2025, its biggest yearly gain since 1979. Analysts say this rise has been fueled by strong demand from investors, central bank purchases—including China buying gold for 14 straight months—and record investment in gold funds.

Market experts also point to political uncertainties in the U.S. as a factor driving investors to gold. Senior analyst Kyle Rodda told Reuters that recent erratic decisions by the Trump administration, including trade threats to European allies, Canada, and France, have reduced confidence in U.S. assets.

Rodda added: “This Trump administration has caused a permanent rupture in the way things are done, and now everyone is turning to gold as the only alternative.”

Meanwhile, a stronger Japanese yen pushed the U.S. dollar lower, making gold cheaper for holders of other currencies. Markets are also watching for possible intervention in the yen ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve meeting, Reuters reported.
