The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban have flogged two people in northern Afghanistan’s Balkh province after convicting them of smuggling alcoholic beverages, the group’s Supreme Court said.
In a statement, the court said the two were each sentenced
to 30 lashes.
The Taliban frequently carry out public corporal punishments
following summary trials on a range of charges, including theft and
alcohol-related offenses.
Such punishments have drawn strong criticism from rights
groups and the international community. The Taliban, however, say the measures
are carried out in accordance with Islamic Sharia law.
