The Kabul Tribune (KT) — About 50,000 people in Afghanistan’s southern Kandahar province are receiving education through radio programs after schools were closed to girls, a local media official said.
Sediqullah Afghan, head of the Kandahar Journalists Press
Club, said radio-based educational programs have provided direct and indirect
learning opportunities through nine local radio stations across the province.
The programs offer lessons in Pashto, Dari, Arabic and
English, as well as Quranic studies, mathematics and basic literacy, Afghan
said.
He said most participants are women and residents of rural
districts who have been largely deprived of access to formal education.
Afghan said the goal of the initiative is to raise literacy
levels by using radio as an alternative means of education.
Schools and educational centers for girls have been fully
closed for the past four years under Taliban rule.
