The Kabul Tribune (KT) - At least five worshippers were killed and 35 others injured after a suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive inside a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state, during evening prayers, police said on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

The explosion occurred at the Al-Adum mosque around 6 p.m. local time as worshippers gathered for prayers. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Reuters noted that the incident comes amid heightened security concerns in northeastern Nigeria, a region that has faced more than a decade of violence by Islamist insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and its Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) faction.

Eyewitnesses described chaos following the blast, with victims rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the State Specialist Hospital. A local market leader, Masta Dalori, told Reuters that the explosion happened during prayers and that details of how it occurred were unclear.

Police confirmed the casualty figures and said explosive ordnance disposal teams had secured the area. Borno State police spokesperson Kenneth Daso told Reuters that investigations were ongoing and advised residents to remain calm and alert.

Reuters also recalled that last August, gunmen killed at least 50 people in an attack on a mosque and nearby homes in northwestern Katsina state, highlighting the continued security challenges facing parts of Nigeria.
