The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Reuters reported that two police officers were killed and a third person died in a bomb explosion in Moscow on Wednesday, near the site where a senior Russian general was assassinated earlier this week.
According to Reuters, the blast occurred after two police
officers approached a man who was acting suspiciously close to the location
where a senior Russian general was killed two days earlier by a car bomb.
Russia has said that earlier attack was carried out by Ukrainian intelligence.
Russia’s State Investigative Committee said the officers
were killed by an explosive device when they approached the suspect, adding
that a third person also died. Authorities did not specify the identity of the
third victim. The committee said criminal cases have been opened into the
murder of law enforcement officers and the illegal trafficking of explosives.
“There was an explosion,” Alexander, a nearby resident, told
Reuters television. “It was a loud bang — like with the car a few days ago.”
Another resident, identified as Roza, told Reuters she was
woken by the explosion in the early hours and said the entire building appeared
to shake.
Unofficial Russian Telegram news channels reported that the
suspected bomber was among those killed and that he detonated the device when
confronted by police. Reuters said it could not independently verify those
claims.
The explosion took place close to where Lieutenant General
Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff’s army operational training
directorate, was killed on Monday. Russian authorities have said they suspect
Ukraine was behind that killing, while there was no official comment from
Ukraine.
Reuters reported that Myrotvorets, an unofficial Ukrainian
website that publishes a database of people it describes as war criminals or
traitors, updated its entry on Sarvarov, saying the 56-year-old general had
been “liquidated.”
A series of Russian military figures and prominent
supporters of the war in Ukraine have been killed during the nearly four-year
conflict. Ukrainian military intelligence has previously said it was
responsible for several such attacks, Reuters reported.
