The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is set to meet Polish President Karol Nawrocki in Warsaw on Friday, as Kyiv seeks to strengthen relations with one of its key allies at a critical moment in its war against Russia, Reuters reported.
The visit comes as European Union leaders have agreed to borrow funds to support Ukraine for the next two years, ensuring continued backing for Kyiv’s war effort against Russia’s invasion. The decision follows recent criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump, who described EU leaders as “weak,” Reuters said.
While there is broad agreement in Poland that supporting Ukraine is necessary to keep Russian forces away from Poland’s borders, attitudes toward Ukrainian refugees have hardened, contributing to growing tensions between the two countries.
In a sign of rising anti-Ukrainian sentiment among some right-wing voters, Nawrocki, a nationalist, had insisted that Zelenskiy should first visit Warsaw to thank Poland for its support before he would consider travelling to Kyiv.
“We should support Ukraine, and we do,” Nawrocki said in an interview published on Monday. “At the same time, we should... ensure that Ukraine treats Poland as a partner. The conflict has been going on for nearly four years, and I have the impression that we, Poles, often don't feel like partners in this relationship,” he said, according to Reuters.
Reuters noted that Nawrocki’s approach toward Kyiv is cooler than that of his predecessor, Andrzej Duda, reflecting growing divisions within Poland’s right-wing political camp.
