The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Pakistani intelligence agencies have arrested Sultan Aziz Azam, spokesperson and founder of the media wing of Daesh-Khorasan (Daesh-K), Pakistan’s Geo News reported, citing a United Nations (UN) sanctions monitoring report.
The UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team’s
16th report said Azam was arrested on May 16, 2025. He founded the terrorist
group’s media wing, Al-Azaim, which was key for recruitment and propaganda
activities. Following his arrest, Daesh-K’s media operations, including the
Voice of Khorasan platform, were largely suspended.
The report added that the arrest of Azam and senior leader
Abu Yasir al-Turki significantly weakened the group’s operational capabilities,
reduced its fighters, neutralized senior commanders, and thwarted planned
attacks.
It also noted that cross-border attacks in Pakistan, mostly
carried out by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from Afghan
territory, remain a major short-term threat to regional stability. Sources said
Azam had previously served as an adviser to the Nangarhar provincial council in
Afghanistan before joining Daesh-K’s media wing.
