The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Syrians are marking the first anniversary of the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad on Monday, as the country continues a fragile recovery after more than a decade of war, Reuters reported.

Official celebrations are planned for Umayyad Square in Damascus, where crowds have already gathered in recent days. Similar events are taking place across other cities nationwide.

Assad fled to Russia a year ago as rebels led by Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, seized Damascus, ending more than 13 years of Assad’s rule. The conflict began as a nationwide uprising and escalated into a prolonged war that left the country deeply divided.

Preparations for the anniversary included several days of public gatherings. On Friday, thousands of people in Hama took to the streets, waving Syria’s new flag to mark the day insurgents led by Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group captured the city during their rapid advance toward Damascus.

The anniversary comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize and rebuild the nation, with Sharaa’s administration facing the challenge of uniting a country long fractured by war.
